There are a few things that 2009 will be remembered for. Here are my top 4 things I will always remember about 2009.
Barack Obama - The 44th, and first African American, President of the United States. He also won the Nobel Peace Prize. What for? Well, for being the 44th, and first African American, President of the United States, I guess.
Swine Flu - The outbreak of the H1N1 influenza strain was deemed a global pandemic, becoming the first condition since 1967 to receive this designation. I still wonder if this wasn't a government conspiracy to boost the economy. Look at all those people out there storing food and supplies! The Lysol company must have had a celebration!
Michael Jackson - The King of Pop's unexpected death, tragic life, award winning music, controversial scandals, and of course legendary dance moves will always be an important part of American pop culture.
Text Driving - It is illegal to text while driving in 19 states, including Utah. And although Utah is not a mandatory "hands-free" state yet, Utah's law defines careless driving as committing a moving violation (other than speeding) while distracted by use of a handheld cellphone or other activities not related to driving. So beware.

A Wonderful Holiday
I don't have any pictures (Mom took care of that! hehe) but we had a WONDERFUL Christmas!
It started Christmas Eve at my parents! The kids were playing games and having a good time. (Katie has a new favorite game - Mancala!) and me hiding from the constant flash of the camera.
Then on to our traditional lamb dinner! Yum! It was wonderful! We were really thankful for the left-overs! Delicious!
In the middle of our dinner we had a special visitor! Santa had a few free moments while he was waiting for the U.S. kids to go to bed so he stopped by to wish the kids a Merry Christmas! It was so nice! He sang songs and talked about the true meaning of Christmas! The kids had a great time! Darrien was a bit of a show off with his politeness! Makes me wonder what he's trying to make up for! LOL It was great!
It wasn't long after dinner that it was time to wind down and go home to bed!
We woke up to some new games for the family and lots of fun stuff in our stockings! And then of course there was the presents that needed unwrapping from under the tree!
The kids were so polite and patient! I love it when they remember their manners during such excitement! I wish they would have continued with their thankfulness when we were at Grandma and Grandpa's!
By the time we got to my parent's, Jenn was already in the kitchen fixing up some eggs and ham! She's so great! After a quick breakfast and a few pokes to Grandpa it was once again time for the unwrapping! TJ got to do the "pass out" honors this year which was a lot of fun for him!
Then it was time to go to Shawn's parents. It was so quiet. This year Misty and her family spent Christmas in Idaho with Matt's parents. It almost didn't feel like Christmas without all of the noise. In fact, I think I snoozed a little in their big comfy chair before dinner!
And I'm glad to say that my talk in the car worked...the kids remembered their manners when it was time for the gift giving.
Saturday Christmas was over. The tree came down. The decorations in the box. And the presents distributed to their correct rooms. The rest of the day was spent on the couch and I don't think I really moved until Monday. Even then it was barely moving. I've been fighting a bit of a headache and exhaustion since. I didn't realize how much the holiday took out of me til it was all over.
I love you all! I'm so thankful I was able to spend the holiday with the people I love. I want to give a special thanks to RJ and Mandy for making the trek out here! I loved sharing our traditions with Mandy! And I'm glad they made it home safely!

My Most Anticipated Movies for 2010
I am a HUGE movie buff. It's too bad I :
A: Don't have a money tree. If anyone happens to have one, I wouldn't mind a seedling!
B: Don't have anyone who wants to go with me.
C: Don't have an on call movie babysitter.
But if I had all of those things, these are the movies I am most anxious to see next year!
Only two do not have trailers released yet!

Today we are having a white elephant exchange at work. White elephant gifts mean something different to everyone. Some people think it's supposed to be a gag gift, some think it should be something you already have at home that you just don't use, and some think it should be an inexpensive gift.
Our team agreed not to spend money on our gifts.
I think I came up with an ingenious gift! I copied and printed up one of my newspaper ads, autographed it and threw it in a frame! LOLOLOL

Peppermint Bark
Why pay $10, $15, or even $20 for peppermint bark when it is probably the EASIEST thing you can make yourself. It is completely fool-proof and delicious.
Since I gave away my fudge secret, I thought I'd share this one with you too. Here is another quick and easy recipe and I get requests to make it all the time!
There are a few variations but here is the simplest.
1 bag of white chocolate chips.
Candy canes
Crush candy canes with rolling pin. You can choose how fine you want them crushed. - Set aside.
TIP: I prefer the mini candy canes. They are easier to crush and have less mess. Leave them in the little bags they come in, then you can just cut the bags and pour.
Lay wax paper on cookie sheet for easy moving.
Melt chocolate in microwave, stir until smooth. Pour on wax paper. Spread to desired thickness.
Sprinkle with crushed candy canes.
You're done! The chocolate will set on it's own. When it's hardend, break into pieces and serve.

It's an easy enough recipe but if the sugar is cooked too long or not long enough or if you didn't stir at a 90 degree angle and the stars aren't aligned with Mars then the fudge can turn out grainy. I really don't like that.
A few years ago, I discovered a new recipe. I call this blasphemous fudge because it goes completely against all tradition and I'm certain my mom and grandma would prefer the "hard way".
This recipe is so easy and so quick that even the kids can do it! And this time of year, I really like easy and quick! Are you ready?
2 packages of chips (chocolate, white, milk, semi-sweet, butterscotch, peanut butter...you catch the drift)
2 TBL butter
1 can sweetened condensed milk
optional: nuts, cherries, candy, peppermint, flavored extract (I love pepermint extract with semi sweet chocolate chips! Yum)
Melt chips and butter in the microwave.
Stir until smooth.
Add sweetened condensed milk.
Stir until smooth.
Stir in any additions you wish.
Pour into container and put in fridge to set.
Viola!
It literally takes less than 5 minutes.

Tricycle Built For Two
This is a little Ride Ryder Tricycle we got for Ciara a few months back. The older kids are constantly trying to ride it...it's quite funny to see these "bigger" bodies on this little bike. And Ciara, of course, gets quite upset when she notices them on HER bike. So naturally, Justin came up with a solution! LOL

Christmas Memories
At work today, my boss asked each of us to send him a favorite holiday moment or tradition. This is what I sent.
I have several traditions that I adore at Christmastime, but some of my fondest memories are of course as a child. It's true what they say about children not remembering the presents but the memories created.
This is kind of a personal story, but I'm sure we've all had "hard times". It's amazing to me how as a child those "hard times" were oblivious to me.
My mom was a single parent - living on welfare in California.
Every year we would gather around the gas fireplace with the blue flames, bundled up in our blankets because it was a freezing 60 degrees and my mom would tape record us kids. We would talk about Christmas stories and why Christmas is important, sing Christmas carols (which is always hilarious to hear a child's version of classic Christmas songs!) and of course talk about what we wanted for Christmas. These tapes were lost over the years during our several moves, but we found a single one a few years back! It was the most hilarious thing!
I was about five, making my brother (RJ) 6 and sister (Jennifer) 3.
Mom started out with the magic Christmas candy. She'd pass around that awful Christmas hard candy that no body really likes but is pretty. She told us that if you make a wish when you eat the magic Christmas candy you're wish will come true. Then you can hear her lecturing me because I put my piece back. "It was peppermint! I don't like peppermint."
My mom then asked each of us what we wanted from Santa Claus. My brother and I really REALLY wanted Hungry Hungry Hippos. My little sister got to make her Christmas wish first, so you could hear us whispering to her in the background, "Say Hungry Hungry Hippos!".
When it was my turn you could hear my little sister whispering, "Say coffee!" LOL She loved coffee.
Suddenly you can hear my brother complaining that he got a wet piece of candy! LOL Seems it was my peppermint!
That year our Christmas wish came true. Santa brought Hungry Hungry Hippos. It wasn't until I was an adult reminiscing with my family that I was told that wish was granted because of my uncle.
On a side note: To this day, Jennifer loves coffee!

Gingerbread Girl
When Katie was three and Justin was two, we took our first family trip out to California. It was right after Thanksgiving. While we were there we visited with Grandpa and Grandma James. This sweet little gingerbread girl caught Katie's eye and she just couldn't stop looking at it. Grandma noticed and handed it to her. She played with it and played with it. When it was time to go, imagine Katie's excitement when Grandma told her to keep it! It was the best thing ever!
To this day it is still a family favorite!
The cute little thing sings "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" and dances from side to side. I have no idea how old it is but I know that we've had it for 4 years. This year when we took it out, it wasn't singing. It would still dance from side to side but there was no song. This made the kids really sad. And batteries didn't help the problem. So Shawn did what Shawn does best. He took it apart. Right away he figured out the problem. He told me what it was, but I couldn't tell you. Something about the connection to the voicebox. He didn't have the tools at home to fix it so he put it in his backpack and brought it to work with him.
He brought it back home good as new! You gotta love a mechanic!
And a special thanks to Grandma and Grandpa James! I don't know if they realize what a treasure they've given my children! And Katie has never forgotten who gave it to her!

Knock Knock

6 Special Things
As you know, my little man turned 6 on Monday!
I wanted to take a moment to name 6 things that I absolutely love about him that makes him unique. There are many many more but these are some of my favorites!
1- He is shy in a special way. I wish I knew how to describe this. All of my kids are shy, but Justin is different with his shyness. It is very sincere and sweet.
2- He loves to build. It doesn't matter what it is, he wants to build it. Blocks, paper, pipes, wood...
3- He can make a noise with his mouth that sounds JUST like a machine gun. How he does it, I don't know! It amazes me each time he does it!
4- When I put the kids to bed, they like me to check on them. When I do, I show them the "I love you" sign from the doorway. I like this because if they are awake they can see me, but if they are asleep it doesn't wake them up. Justin has this thing where he likes to have the "I love you" sign up before I even get there! I'm not sure if he just lays there with his hand in the air, but he loves it when he "beats me" to it!
5- He is ticklish on every inch of his little body! If you even gesture that you are going to tickle him, he starts laughing!
6- He gives great kisses. My boy knows how to pucker! My girls are dainty with their kisses but Justin knows how to really get those lips out there! LOL

I wanted to take a moment to name 6 things that I absolutely love about him that makes him unique. There are many many more but these are some of my favorites!

What A Wonderful Weekend
So to call it a weekend is a bit of an understatement. My weekend consisted of 6 days off work! Woohoo! Those are my kind of weekends!
It started with a beautiful Thanksgiving with family!
We traditionally have Thanksgiving with Shawn's family and I love it! It was wonderful.
Friday started very very early! Like 1:30 in the morning early! I got up and made it to Jenn's by 2:30! I was very proud of myself! I don't think we officially stopped shopping until 2:00 in the afternoon! How crazy is that! But we got some good deals and had some fun! There's nothing like a bunch of crazy, exhausted, highly cafinated people in the wee hours of the morning to let you know the Christmas season has began!
Saturday was our post-Thanksgiving-Thanksgiving. This, I love too! Because our family now has other families, we make it a point to gather either Friday or Saturday with my parents and share in a Thanksgiving feast! As always, it was delicious! Everyone was cheerful and we were able to spend a joyous dinner together.
That night, I had the nieces and nephews over for a sleepover to kick off Justin's birthday! There is usually only one word to describe these sleepovers. Loud. It sums it up perfectly.
Sunday, I was blessed with my family coming over for cake and ice cream to wish my Justin boy a happy birthday! Thanks to everyone who came. I know it wasn't the most convenient time for everybody - in fact, I highly doubt it was convenient for anybody, so my sincerest thanks for making it! It means a lot to me! I love you all!
Monday was the offical day my little man turned 6! We spent a quiet evening at home with some chocolate pie!
Tuesday I should have gone into work but I just wasn't ready yet. So I stayed home. I even got to take a little nap!
We were invited up to Hill AFB for a tree lighting event. I rarely do things in the middle of the week. It really throws me off schedule, but I am willing to make an exception here and there. And I am glad we went. This is going to be the last Christmas I have with my sister for awhile and although I hate to think about it, I try to take advantage of all the little things we can do together.
The kids had a really good time. There were lots of crafts and a TON of people! We got our first visit with Santa too! The kids surprised me with what they asked for this year. Justin asked for a new chess set. Very practical and mature. That's my boy. And Katie asked for a puppy. That's right. A puppy. I told her that Santa can only do so many miracles and that's one that he just might not be able to perform this year. But she's pretty confident that he will bring her one. Ciara I don't think asked for anything, but she wasn't scared of him at all. She walked right up and hopped on his lap when it was her turn, so that's good.
And now we are on to today. I'm at work again, a bit out of practice. It's funny how a long weekend can throw off your game, but it's all good! Christmas is in the air!
